Lehigh Valley STEM (L V STEM)
Our program inspires students of all ages to enter STEM disciplines and for those in graduate programs to develop into top-notch Ph.D. scientists and engineers with a passion to reach out to disadvantaged youth. Over 90% of Fellows indicated that the project had a significant impact on their career or discipline choices. Program highlights include: (1) the development of a Martian Landscape for use with remotely controlled mobile robots (featured in the NY Times during a visit by US Representative Charles Dent and NASA Astronaut Paul Richards); (2) a curriculum for Java Programming developed by the Computer Science Outreach Team at Dieruff High; and (3) intelligent tutoring technology for the classroom developed by a fellow as part of her Ph.D. research. Fellows are benefiting from the prestigious Teaching Fellowship that supports research and also are developing their presentation and communication skills through their work on the outreach teams. A unique aspect of our project is the close collaboration between K-12, higher education, and industry through a partnership that includes: Allentown and Bethlehem Area School Districts, local businesses including Binney & Smith (Crayola), Gouck Architects, Rohrbach Concrete, Agere, Suntex, Air Products, PP&L, the Lehigh Career and Technical Institute, the Pennsylvania PITA program, and Lehigh and Kutztown Universities.
