GK-12 Teaching Fellows Program
Louisiana Tech University
This comprehensive program is designed to meet the unique needs of rural K-12 schools in northern Louisiana. In addition to the impact in the classroom, the project’s influence has been broadened by incorporating academic events and programs such as Family Math and Science nights, ACT Prep Courses, and school-wide science and math EXPO’s. These programs are designed to increase parental involvement, improve success on college entrance exams, and generate interest in STEM careers. At the Family Math and Science nights, Teaching Fellows have engaged more than 1500 students and parents in science and mathematics activities that incorporate the Fellows’ diverse research experiences and STEM knowledge. Fellows and Partner Teachers have co-authored several successful grant proposals to purchase scientific equipment necessary to bring inquiry-based teaching to multiple classrooms. In addition, Teaching Fellows have used their content knowledge and research experiences to design and run summer science camps for more than 500 K-12 students from poor, rural areas. Our ACT Prep program has been nationally recognized by the American Society for Engineering Science for its efforts in preparing many underrepresented students for the ACT. Through development of innovative classroom lessons and leadership in planning and facilitating a variety of events, Teaching Fellows have increased their ability to communicate, solve problems, and work as part of a team as well as developing a lifelong commitment to improving K-12 education.
